Bad breath may be a sign of dental disease. Gingivitis, tartar, and periodontal disease can release bacteria into the bloodstream stressing internal organs, leading to disease. Starting with your pet’s first exam our doctors will check your pet’s mouth for any signs of discomfort or disease. Dr. Lance will set up an individualized plan for your pet’s healthy teeth and mouth.
Dentistry is an often overlooked but very important part of your pet’s health care. Plaque is the thin film of saliva, bacteria, and food particles that sits on the surface of your pet’s teeth. When it hardens due to minerals in the saliva it is called tartar.
Since tartar is 85% bacterium, it can cause a lot of problems, including bad breath, infected teeth and gums, loss of teeth, and infections in distant organs such as the kidney and heart.
Dental Cleanings are recommended and usually needed annually. Your pet will be lightly anesthetized using the ultra-safe gas, isoflourane; then your pet’s teeth will be root planed, scaled, and polished.
This is identical to what your dental hygienist does! After, you can get a sweet kiss from your furry friend and we’ll show you how to maintain good oral hygiene.
Our staff takes regular continuing education sessions and seminars in dental care along with other aspects of veterinary science. With diligent home care your pet will require less frequent dental procedures – it could be every three years or more.
Your pet’s dental care doesn’t rest with your veterinarian alone. As a pet owner, you play a pivotal role in helping ensure your pet’s dental health through regular teeth brushing.
